Car care guide

How often should you wash your car?

· By Jamie R.

There is no single wash schedule that suits every vehicle. A car used for a short city commute and parked under cover gathers dirt differently from one that spends long days on open roads or sits beneath trees. Instead of treating a calendar reminder as a strict rule, look at how your car is used and what has built up on its surfaces. A manageable routine can keep the vehicle looking cared for without making cleaning feel like another full-time job.

Let your driving conditions set the pace

Road spray, dust, construction areas, tree sap and seasonal weather all influence how quickly a vehicle needs an exterior refresh. If you regularly travel on muddy or dusty routes, you may notice grime sooner than someone who mainly drives paved streets. Rain can rinse loose dust, but it does not always leave a car clean; water can carry dirt across the bodywork and leave marks as it dries.

Rather than washing more often by default, check the surfaces every week or two. Pay attention to the lower doors, rear bumper and wheels, where road residue is easy to spot. If dirt is collecting heavily or visibility through the windows is affected, it may be time to arrange a wash. A quick exterior package is a practical choice when the cabin is still in good shape.

Notice the season and where you park

Weather changes what lands on the car. Pollen can coat paint during warmer months, while wet conditions leave more road film along the lower panels. Parking under trees may mean dealing with leaves, sap or bird mess. When something sticky or potentially damaging appears, avoid scrubbing it dry. A suitable wash can help lift residue with less risk of dragging grit across the finish.

Covered parking can slow the build-up of some dirt, but it does not remove the need to check the vehicle. Dust can still settle in a garage, and cars parked indoors may collect fingerprints or marks from everyday use. Consider your actual surroundings and respond when the finish looks dirty, rather than assuming a sheltered car never needs attention.

Build a routine you can keep

A useful routine is one that fits your schedule. Some drivers prefer a regular visit every few weeks; others book when the car needs it or before a long trip. You can keep an eye on the cabin separately: crumbs, dust and fingerprints may call for an interior refresh even when the outside still looks presentable. Matching the package to the part that needs attention keeps the visit straightforward.

Before booking, consider the vehicle’s size, how much dirt has accumulated and whether you want interior care as well. A basic exterior wash commonly takes around 20 to 30 minutes, while a complete clean needs longer depending on condition. If you are unsure, describe your driving and parking habits and ask about a suitable option. There is no need to choose more than the car needs.

A cleaner car, without a rigid rule

The best washing frequency is the one that responds to your roads, weather and everyday use. Check the vehicle regularly, clean when grime becomes noticeable and make room for an interior reset when the cabin needs it. A practical car wash package can help maintain a fresh appearance while keeping the process easy to plan. Start with what you can see, then choose the service that makes sense for your next drive.
